Merck-Moderna Cancer Vaccine Demonstrates Promising Results in Melanoma Trial
Merck and Moderna have made significant progress in their personalized cancer vaccine treatment, which combines up to nine doses of mRNA vaccine with Merck's Keytruda immunotherapy. The treatment, known as intismeran autogene, has shown promising results in preventing melanoma from returning or spreading in patients who had undergone surgery. In a large clinical trial involving over 1,000 patients, the treatment significantly reduced the risk of recurrence or death by about half and the risk of distant metastasis or death by 59%, compared to Keytruda alone.
The personalized cancer vaccine is designed to train the immune system to recognize and attack mutations found specifically in a patient's tumor. This approach differs from traditional chemotherapy, which can harm healthy cells along with cancer cells. Moderna President Stephen Hoge stated that results from several trials are expected over the next year or two.
Merck and Moderna are currently conducting large trials in non-small cell lung cancer patients, as well as mid-stage trials in bladder and kidney cancers and early-stage trials in pancreatic and stomach cancers. Roche and BioNTech are also testing a similar mRNA treatment, autogene cevumeran, in colon and pancreatic cancer patients who have undergone surgery.
