Merck Upgrade Lifts Healthcare Stocks Amid Sector-Wide Fluctuations
Healthcare stocks saw an overall gain on Wednesday, despite individual fluctuations. Merck's shares rose by 2.4% after Daiwa, a Japanese brokerage firm, upgraded its rating to outperform from neutral and increased its price target to $143 from $120.
This boost helped lift the market-cap-weighted Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) by 0.3%, as well as the NYSE Healthcare Index, which rose 0.2%. However, not all healthcare stocks fared well. Cencora dropped more than 5% due to a shift in some Walgreens prescription volume it handled away from July 1st.
Cencora emphasized that its prime vendor agreement with Walgreens remains unchanged and represents most of its business. Nevertheless, the update had a negative impact on sentiment. Legend Biotech also experienced losses after Oppenheimer downgraded it to perform from outperform, citing competition and potential strategy changes related to its cancer therapy Carvykti.
In contrast, Definium Therapeutics saw gains following its announcement that its phase 3 trial of DT120 met its main goal for treating generalized anxiety disorder. While Merck's performance may have contributed to the sector's overall gain, it is essential to consider the 'big-stock effect', which can create a misleading impression of broad strength within the healthcare group.
