Merck's Cancer Vaccine Trial Hits Major Milestone, Personalised Approach Shows Promise
Merck (NYSE:MRK) has achieved a significant milestone in its cancer vaccine trial. The company's late-stage trial combining an individualised neoantigen therapy with its flagship immunotherapy met both its principal and key secondary endpoints in patients with resected melanoma.
The study enrolled over 1,000 patients with completely resected disease spanning stages 2B to 4, randomising them to receive either the combination or the immunotherapy alone for approximately a year. The results showed that the combination delivered statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in delaying recurrence and preventing cancer from spreading to distant sites.
This result is a major breakthrough for personalised cancer vaccines, which have been pursued for decades with limited success. Merck's individualised neoantigen therapy sequences a patient's tumour, identifies the mutations most likely to provoke an immune response, and manufactures a messenger RNA medicine encoding those neoantigens. Administered alongside a checkpoint inhibitor, the aim is to direct a trained immune response specifically at cells carrying those mutations.
The company plans to present detailed data at an upcoming medical meeting and engage with regulators on filing submissions. The breadth of Merck's development programme, spanning multiple tumour types beyond melanoma, adds significance to this result.
