Merck's Personalized Cancer Vaccine Scores Big Win in Late-Stage Trial

A late-stage trial of Merck's (NYSE:MRK) personalized cancer vaccine combined with its immunotherapy Keytruda met its main goals in patients with surgically removed, high-need melanoma.

The vaccine is built individually for each patient based on mutations found in their own tumor tissue. When paired with Keytruda, the vaccine significantly extended the period patients remained free of recurrence and distant spread compared to Keytruda used alone.

The result is considered a milestone for individualized cancer vaccines broadly, marking one of the first times an approach built entirely around a single patient's own tumor mutations has cleared a rigorous, randomized late-stage trial.
