Meta Platforms, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly planning to launch its next-generation in-house artificial intelligence (AI) chips in the first half of 2027. The goal is to deliver better performance per watt and per dollar than Nvidia's current processors.

The development of Meta's AI chips started in 2023 as part of a broader effort to build out its AI infrastructure while reducing its reliance on industry-leading processors from Nvidia. According to Yee Jiun Song, Meta's vice president of engineering, the new chips are being engineered to deliver better performance per watt and per dollar than 'whatever Nvidia is currently shipping.'

Meta is working with Broadcom on chip designs and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) on production. The company recently received 12 prototypes of the new chip from TSMC, which performed within 2% to 3% of Meta's simulations.
