Meta Gains Amid US Stock Market Decline and Rising Oil Prices
The US stock market indexes dropped on Wednesday, but one megacap, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), gained 6.3%.
Key indices, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500, fell by late morning, with the Nasdaq Composite down 0.7%. The Treasury Department's longer-dated debt buyback was tripled to $6 billion, but yields rose anyway.
The 10-year yield climbed about 4 basis points to roughly 4.85%, and the 30-year yield rose above 5.3%. Some traders reportedly wanted a larger buyback, so tripling the operation to $6 billion was seen as disappointing.
Oil prices also contributed to the decline, with Brent crude rising about 3.4% to $101.25, its first trip above $101 since July. The US military's destruction of five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday may be a factor in the increase.
The most notable positive development was Meta Platforms' rollout of Muse, a free AI assistant for U.S. users, which rose 6.3% after the announcement. This new product is seen as a powerful tool that could threaten incumbent AI assistant providers like Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN).
