Meta Platforms Set to Overtake Google's Advertising Crown in 2026
Meta Platforms is set to surpass Google's advertising revenue for the first time in 2026, according to EMARKETER. The company's relentless optimization of its AI recommendation engine has led it to capture a higher share of marketing budgets.
Meta's ad sales were $114.1 billion through the first half of 2026, a 30% increase from the same period last year. In contrast, Google Search revenue was $123.7 billion in H1 2026, up only around 18%. YouTube ads contributed $21 billion in sales, up just 12%.
Meta's AI-Enabled Discovery Engine is key to its ad success, allowing the company to greatly improve ad targeting, especially in short-form video. This ties back to a vital part of Meta's AI strategy; using technology to improve ad targeting and increase user engagement on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
The forecast for 2028 indicates that Meta's ad revenue will increase to $316 billion, approximately $18 billion higher than EMARKETER's estimate for Google. However, investors need to pay attention to costs, as Meta's strong ad growth is partially a function of the billions it is spending on AI infrastructure.
