Meta Poised to Overtake Google Search Ad Revenue by 2026
Meta Platforms (META) is on track to surpass Alphabet's Google Search advertising revenue by the end of 2026, according to Bernstein analysts. The firm attributed much of the acceleration in digital advertising growth to artificial intelligence (AI), which is improving almost every part of the process.
Bernstein noted that AI is driving ad targeting, recommendations, engagement, and delivery, and this has led to Meta capturing nearly half of every incremental digital advertising dollar in the second quarter. The firm's estimates made in 2024 had projected digital advertising growth in 2026 at less than half the pace that Meta and Google Search are now delivering.
The largest platforms, including Meta, Google, and Amazon (AMZN), are seeing their strongest ad growth in years despite already operating at massive scale. Larger platforms have more user data, more sophisticated audience targeting, stronger advertising automation, and better measurement tools. This gives AI more data to work with and makes its output more effective.
Google is still seeing strong growth in its core advertising business, but its broader advertising business is not moving uniformly. Meta may already be roughly comparable with Google Search when looking at advertising revenue on a like-for-like basis and excluding certain Google businesses such as Maps and Gmail.
