Meta's Q2 2026 earnings showed a stark contrast to Alphabet's performance. While Meta missed EPS by 14.42% due to compressed margins, Alphabet raised around $70 billion in fresh capital and suspended its buyback program.

Margins tell opposite stories between the two companies. Meta's operating margin collapsed to 31% from 43% a year ago, with free cash flow falling to $784 million, an 91.31% drop. In contrast, Alphabet's operating margin expanded to 34%, driven by Google Cloud's growth of 82% to $24.8 billion.

Meta funds its AI buildout entirely through ads, while Alphabet has diversified monetization through both Cloud and Gemini Enterprise. The critical gap is monetization: Google Cloud sits on a $514 billion backlog, whereas Meta relies heavily on ad impressions up 14% and price per ad up 12%.
