Micron's Memory Dominance: A Strategic Asset in the AI Era
The AI era has transformed the tech industry's pricing power dynamics, shifting focus from software platforms and internet giants to companies building AI infrastructure. Suppliers of critical components are reaping extraordinary profits, with memory maker Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) standing out as one of the biggest beneficiaries.
Micron's 85% gross margin exceeds those of Meta Platforms (META), Alphabet (GOOG), and Microsoft (MSFT), companies that generate enormous profits from advertising, software sales, or search and advertising. The memory industry has become a bottleneck in AI development, with only three companies, Micron, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix (SKHY), controlling about 90% of the advanced memory market.
Industry forecasts project tight high-bandwidth memory (HBM) supply through 2027, sustaining pricing strength. While investors worry that new production capacity will bring supply and demand back into equilibrium, Micron executives argue that yesterday's pricing pressure has contributed to today's shortages.
