Microsoft 365 Outage: Core Authentication Configuration Causes Widespread Issues
Microsoft's Microsoft 365 service experienced a significant outage on August 31st, affecting thousands of customers worldwide. The issue began around 3pm UST and was initially reported through Downdetector as a surge in problems with Outlook.
The tech giant attributed the outage to a 'core authentication configuration used by multiple Microsoft 365 services', impacting several applications including OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, and Microsoft Teams. Users experienced various issues such as failing Copilot prompts, delayed or failed file opening, Office policy-label retrieval, OneDrive synchronization, mobile camera upload, and video playback.
Microsoft has confirmed that a fix is underway, with services beginning to recover. The company stated that service telemetry indicates recovery, with availability increasing across previously impacted scenarios as remediation progresses.
