Microsoft Agrees to Protect Student Data with AFT in Landmark Deal
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has reached an agreement with Microsoft regarding the use of artificial intelligence in schools. The deal includes 10 legally enforceable protections, including a provision that prevents Microsoft from using teachers' and students' data to improve its AI models, except in 'narrow safety and security' circumstances.
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten praised the agreement, saying it sets a high bar for child privacy and AI safety. The union states that if Microsoft violates the agreement, the company can be liable for a breach of contract.
The announcement comes amid discussions about artificial intelligence in schools and concerns over how much time kids spend online. Brad Smith, Microsoft's vice chair and president, said the agreement will be extended to every school district across the country.
