Microsoft Aims for Chip Catch-Up with New AI Processor
Microsoft is gearing up to unveil its latest in-house AI chip, Maia 300, this fall. The company has been trailing behind cloud rivals like Alphabet and Amazon in developing custom chips for artificial intelligence tasks.
According to a report by The Information, Microsoft first launched the Maia AI chip in November 2023 but has since lagged behind its competitors. To catch up, the tech giant is preparing to introduce an upgraded version of the chip.
The new chip will be manufactured using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (TSMC) 3-nanometer technology and is expected to feature a substantial amount of static random-access memory (SRAM), which can give AI systems a speed advantage in handling user requests. Microsoft is reportedly in talks with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for more than 300,000 chips by 2027.
The company aims to eventually produce over 1 million Maia 300 chips and persuade major cloud customers like Anthropic to adopt the technology. However, component supply constraints and ongoing production talks with TSMC may disrupt these plans.
