Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have partnered to simplify the process of connecting workloads across their rival cloud platforms. The collaboration combines Microsoft's Azure Multicloud Interconnect with AWS Interconnect, using open API specifications designed to improve networking between different cloud providers.

The service will allow customers to create private, high-speed connections between Microsoft Azure and AWS, potentially cutting a process that can take weeks or months down to a simpler setup. The connections will support speeds of up to 100Gbps from launch, with scope for higher bandwidth in future.

Microsoft said the complexity of connecting multiple cloud environments has traditionally involved coordinating physical connections, routing, provisioning, monitoring and ongoing network management. Azure Multicloud Interconnect is intended to hide much of that underlying complexity, allowing customers to establish dedicated private connections through a simplified interface.
