Microsoft and Paige Unveil Pathology AI Trained on 2.3 Million Slides

Microsoft and Paige, now part of Tempus, have collaborated to introduce PRISM2, a multimodal foundation model for computational pathology tasks.

The model was trained on 2.3 million digitized pathology slides and 14 million question-and-answer pairs from approximately 685,000 pathology reports.

PRISM2 uses diagnostic language as a training signal, allowing it to connect microscopic tissue patterns with terminology in pathology reports.

The researchers evaluated the model against three specialized Paige products for detecting prostate cancer, breast cancer, and breast lymph node metastases. PRISM2 matched or outperformed these systems without additional task-specific training.
