Microsoft Axes DirectX Work Graphs in Shader Model 6.10
Microsoft has quietly shelved its DirectX Work Graphs feature in Shader Model 6.10, a move that marks a reversal of fortunes for the technology.
The company had introduced Work Graphs with Shader Model 6.8 in March this year, after previewing it back in 2023.
Work Graphs were designed to give GPUs more control over generating and scheduling their own workloads, allowing them to bypass repeated trips to the CPU for task allocation.
However, Microsoft has now admitted that Work Graph adoption has been limited due to various reasons including hardware and driver constraints, as well as a lack of installed base.
The company will continue to support Work Graphs through Shader Model 6.8 and 6.9, but has decided to disable the feature for SM 6.10 and later versions.
