Microsoft Axes WMIC Tool from Windows 11 Builds
Microsoft has taken another step in its effort to improve Windows 11 security by removing the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool from recent builds, including versions 24H2 and 25H2. This move is part of a phased deprecation process that began years ago, with WMIC previously deprecated in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 10.
WMIC has been a target for threat actors, who have used it as a LOLBIN to delete Shadow Volume Copies, query and uninstall security software, and add exclusions to Microsoft Defender. The tool's removal from new installations aims to prevent such abuse.
The underlying WMI system remains unaffected by the removal of WMIC. Microsoft recommends IT administrators transition to modern alternatives like PowerShell, WMI's COM API, or .NET libraries for management tasks.
