Microsoft Backpedals on OneDrive Photos App After User Outrage
Microsoft has announced plans to address criticism over its OneDrive Photos app on Windows 11 devices. The company's new photo app was rolled out without explicit user consent, sparking frustration among many users.
The lack of choice and inability to remove the app separately were major concerns for users. Those who wanted to uninstall it had to give up the entire OneDrive application.
According to Microsoft, the distribution occurred through the existing OneDrive client, but a widespread rollout was not originally intended. However, the reason why many users were affected remains unclear.
To address user concerns, Microsoft is introducing a separate uninstall option for OneDrive Photos in September 2026. This will allow users to remove the app without giving up their cloud service access.
