Microsoft Boosts Production of Next-Gen AI Chip Amid NVIDIA Dependence
Microsoft is reportedly planning to significantly increase production of its next-generation AI chip, Maia 300. According to reports, the company aims to deliver over 300,000 units by 2027, a substantial increase from the current generation's production numbers.
The Maia 300 chip is expected to make its public debut this fall and may be launched as early as next month. Microsoft is currently in talks with Taiwan Semiconductor for a production contract, which would secure over one million units of capacity for the new chip.
The company's goal is to break free from its reliance on NVIDIA chips, which it currently uses to run most of its AI software. Maia 300 offers cost advantages, with internal tests showing that it delivers operating costs 30% to 40% lower than NVIDIA's cutting-edge chips when running OpenAI and Microsoft's own models.
