Microsoft Caps Employee AI Spending, Defaults to GPT-5.6 Model
Microsoft has implemented internal limits on AI spending by employees as part of its efforts to manage costs and maximize outcomes from AI investments. In an email, Jay Parikh, Executive Vice President at Microsoft, emphasized that the company's goal is not to 'maximize token usage' but to achieve better results for customers and the business.
The company has made OpenAI's GPT-5.6 the default AI model for internal use, citing its lower cost compared to other alternatives. Every division at Microsoft has been given an AI token budget target since July 2023, and employees can view their individual spending through an internal dashboard.
The move follows a broader trend among companies seeking to reduce unnecessary AI spending. Amazon, Adobe, Atlassian, and Citi have also introduced steps to limit excessive AI usage by employees.
