Microsoft Caps Xbox Cloud Gaming Hours Amid Rising Costs

Microsoft is introducing time limits on its Xbox Cloud Gaming service for subscribers of the priciest tier, Game Pass Ultimate. The move starts in November and marks a shift away from unlimited cloud streaming that was once one of the key benefits of this subscription.

The exact hourly cap has not been specified yet, but it's clear that Microsoft is trying to manage costs associated with streaming games at scale. Analysts have long questioned the sustainability of an all-you-can-stream model without some kind of throttle.

This isn't the first sign that Microsoft is looking for ways to tighten margins in its gaming division. The company hiked Game Pass Ultimate pricing earlier this year, and it recently closed a massive acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which adds new games and expenses to the catalog.

Microsoft's move comes as Amazon continues to invest in its Luna cloud gaming service and Nvidia expands GeForce Now's reach with better hardware partnerships. The company will need to carefully balance any cap with the risk of alienating subscribers who expect an unlimited perk.
