Microsoft Commits to Massive Wastewater Carbon Removal Deal with CREW Carbon
Microsoft has signed a long-term carbon removal offtake agreement with CREW Carbon, expanding its portfolio of carbon removal pathways as it works towards becoming carbon negative by 2030.
The deal covers up to 23,602 metric tons of durable carbon removal generated through CREW Carbon's wastewater alkalinity enhancement technology. This process increases the ability of wastewater treatment systems to capture and permanently store atmospheric CO2 while also improving plant operations.
Microsoft has emerged as one of the world's largest buyers of durable carbon removal credits, using long-term purchasing agreements to help commercialize emerging climate technologies. The agreement with CREW Carbon represents another commercial milestone for the startup following previous advance purchase commitments, including a $32 million offtake agreement facilitated by Frontier in December 2024.
CREW Carbon's approach integrates with existing wastewater treatment facilities, enhancing water chemistry to accelerate the natural conversion of atmospheric CO2 into stable dissolved bicarbonates. This enables long-term storage while utilizing infrastructure already in place.
