Microsoft Completes Open-Source Migration of WinUI Framework

Microsoft has completed its plan to make WinUI fully open-source, moving the development of Windows 11's native user interface framework to GitHub. The move marks the end of a multi-stage effort that began over a year ago.

The company followed a four-phase migration process and completed the third phase in May, with the final stage now bringing mainline development into the public repository. Currently, Microsoft developers are submitting pull requests to test its end-to-end development processes before accepting contributions from the wider developer community.

This move will give developers greater visibility into the evolution of the framework and allow them to follow changes affecting Windows application development. WinUI is used for building native Windows applications and remains an important part of Microsoft's Windows App SDK ecosystem.
