Microsoft Confirms Famous Pirated Key Was Legitimate Corporate License

In a surprising revelation, Microsoft has confirmed that one of the most famous pirated Windows XP keys was not a hack, but rather a legitimate corporate licensing key.

The key in question, FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8, had been circulating online for years and was believed to be a bypass of Microsoft's anti-piracy system. However, according to Dave Plummer, the engineer who created Task Manager and worked on Windows Product Activation (WPA), it was actually a Volume License Key (VLK) that had been lost by Microsoft.

The VLK allowed companies to activate multiple PCs without going through the normal activation process required for consumers. However, when it fell into the wrong hands, it became a widely used pirated key, allowing hundreds of thousands of PCs to install Windows XP without activating it.
