Microsoft Confirms September Updates Cause RDS Failures on Windows Server Systems
Microsoft has confirmed reports that its September security updates caused failures in Remote Desktop Services (RDS) on Windows Server systems. The issue affects Windows Server 2012 and later, as well as Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices.
The company said that after installing the Patch Tuesday updates, RDP connections might fail after several minutes, sign-in issues may occur, or servers may hang during configuration. Related tools such as Microsoft Management Console (MMC), RDS Licensing Diagnoser, and File Explorer may also become unresponsive.
Mitigation is available in the form of Group Policy settings that can be applied on enterprise-managed devices. Users who cannot access virtual machines through RDP may be able to temporarily restore RDS connectivity by stopping and restarting the affected virtual machine.
