Microsoft Consolidates Copilot Apps Amid Industry-Wide Restructuring
Microsoft is consolidating its consumer-facing Copilot app and business-oriented Microsoft 365 Copilot app, eliminating several underperforming features in the process. The move reflects an acknowledgment that personal and professional AI use often overlap.
The company will merge the two apps by August 18, 2026, with consumer users losing access to Group Chats, AI-generated podcasts, and experimental features from Copilot Labs. Business subscribers will retain a similar research tool called Researcher.
Microsoft is also retiring the animated character Mico and warns that some features may be temporarily unavailable during the transition. Files from the standalone Copilot app will migrate to OneDrive.
