Microsoft Converts Physical Xbox Games to Digital Licenses with Disc-to-Digital
Microsoft has introduced a new feature called Disc-to-Digital that allows Xbox One and Series X gamers to convert their physical game copies into digital licenses. The program, which starts rolling out on August 31, supports thousands of titles from day one, with more games expected to join later.
The process involves inserting the supported game disc into an Xbox console and claiming a digital version of that title. Once redeemed, the game functions like a regular digital purchase within Microsoft's ecosystem.
Eligible titles can take advantage of features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing users to continue playing on devices without a disc drive, including PCs, cloud-connected handhelds, and Xbox Series S consoles.
The digital license remains connected to the physical game itself, preserving its value. However, this also means that digital ownership becomes less straightforward, as games listed in a player's library may disappear if the associated disc changes hands.
