Microsoft Cracks Down on Excessive AI Spending Amid Industry-Wide Shift
Microsoft has imposed new limits on its engineers' spending on AI tools at work and emphasized that maximizing AI use internally is not the company's goal. This move comes as part of a growing trend among major companies to curb wasteful AI usage.
In an email to employees, Jay Parikh, executive vice president at Microsoft, stated that 'tokenmaxxing', or excessive spending on AI tokens, is not what the company is optimizing for. Instead, Microsoft aims to maximize outcomes that benefit customers and its business.
The company has updated its internal guidance and will make OpenAI GPT-5.6, a cheaper model, the default for internal use. As of July 2026, Microsoft divisions will have an AI token budget target, and employees can track their individual AI spending. The email also links to updated Copilot guidelines.
This change in policy is not due to financial constraints; Microsoft's latest earnings report shows increased revenue, operating income, and net income, beating Wall Street expectations. However, the move aligns with recent changes at other companies aiming to throttle employees' AI use.
