Microsoft Cracks Down on R-Rated Games in Australia with Age Verification Checks

Microsoft has started enforcing age verification checks for R18+ games in Australia, requiring users to confirm they are at least 18 years old before accessing or purchasing content from the Microsoft Store and Xbox Store. This move is part of Australia's Age-Restricted Material Codes, which were implemented on March 9 following a December underage social media ban.

The age verification requirements started this month, according to an email sent by Microsoft to Australian users. While access to games already owned by Australian users isn't subject to age verification, users will need to verify their age before purchasing or accessing new content rated 18+. The verification process involves providing identification or taking a selfie.

Microsoft has listed Yoti and Verifymy as its 'age assurance partners', which means any data uploaded during the verification process is encrypted, not shared with the company, and deleted after verification. However, some local gamers have criticized the requirement online, labeling it as 'extreme overreach'. It's also worth noting that Australians who verify their age aren't guaranteed to have full access to all content within each game.
