Microsoft Data Center Expansion Tied to Tax Increment Finance District Vote
The St. Joseph County Council in Indiana is set to vote on whether to expand a tax increment finance (TIF) district to include Microsoft's data center in Granger. The existing TIF district already captures additional taxes paid by property owners in the area, with any excess funds going towards future development projects.
According to Carl Baxmeyer, St. Joseph County commission president, if approved, all tax revenue from the Microsoft data center would fund road improvements, a railroad overpass, and extension of water and sewer services in the TIF district.
Jan Cervelli, a candidate for St. Joseph County Council District C seat representing Granger, expressed concerns about capturing tax revenue within the TIF district rather than using it for countywide needs.
