Microsoft Data Center Plan Sparks Debate Over Tax Dollars in Granger
The St. Joseph County Council has been discussing a plan to bring Microsoft's data center into a special Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district in Granger, Indiana.
The proposed TIF would allow the county to borrow up to $4 million and freeze current property tax levels within the district, capturing future growth for funding projects such as infrastructure upgrades and park development.
Council members expressed concerns about the proposal, with some questioning how the funds will be allocated and whether it would benefit the community at large. 'The county loses the property tax money,' said Randall Figg, a councilman. 'They really need to have a defined purpose. There needs to be some guardrails on how that money is spent for the greater good of the community.'
The county council is set to vote on the expanded TIF district and $4 million bond in two weeks, with public comment invited.
