Microsoft Debunks 'God Mode' Myth Again
A 16-year-old myth about Windows has been debunked by Microsoft once again, but it still won't die. The 'God Mode' trick, where renaming a folder to a specific string unlocks a hidden master settings panel, was never a real feature to begin with.
Brandon Paddock, a former Microsoft engineer who is now the company's Principal Software Architect for AI in Microsoft Word, explained on his personal blog in 2010 that the trick works because of two ordinary, documented pieces of the Windows shell.
The first piece is a developer feature that lets any folder named in the format DisplayName.CLSID act as a shortcut into a specific part of Windows. The second piece is a folder called All Tasks, which is used internally by Windows and powers Control Panel search results in the Start menu.
Paddock's conclusion was clear: 'God Mode? Hardly.'
