Microsoft Dev Brings Back Live Tiles in New Email Client Rival
A former Microsoft developer is reviving live tiles in a new email client called DayFrame. Jeff Fritz, who left Microsoft in mid-July, is behind this project that could potentially rival Outlook. Live tiles were introduced to Windows desktops with the release of Windows 8 and continued in Windows 10 through Project Neon, but they disappeared from Windows 11.
DayFrame is a .NET application developed using .NET MAUI Blazor Hybrid. It's not just an inbox replacement but a shell capable of hosting separate modules for email, calendar, and contacts, with features like GitHub integration, photos, social media, instant messaging, a journal, and feed reader also under consideration.
The app has a consistent sidebar of Live Tiles that resembles Windows Phone, allowing users to access various modules as well as information. Users can customize colors, font types, and sizes of tiles and even deactivate unused modules. DayFrame is still in development, with no public build available for testing yet.
