Microsoft Doubles Down on AI Expansion with Data Centre Upgrade
Microsoft is planning to triple its data centre capacity by 2032, increasing it from around 12 gigawatts currently. The expansion aims to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The company has faced computing-capacity constraints due to the accelerated demand for AI and cloud services. The new capacity will give Azure greater ability to handle AI workloads while strengthening Microsoft's position in the highly competitive cloud market.
Only a portion of Microsoft's existing data centre footprint is dedicated to AI-specific chips, but the planned expansion will substantially increase AI-related computing capacity.
The key question for investors is whether heavy AI capital spending will translate into durable usage across Azure, Copilot and Microsoft's wider software ecosystem.
