Microsoft Drops 32GB RAM Requirement for Windows 11 Amid DRAM Crisis
Microsoft has revised its stance on recommended RAM for Windows 11 users. The software giant previously stated that users should have at least 32GB of RAM, but due to the ongoing DRAM crisis, it has removed this requirement from its website.
The change is likely a response to the rising cost of RAM and solid-state drives (SSDs) as a result of supply chain constraints. Microsoft's previous recommendations were based on the assumption that users would be able to afford more memory, but with prices becoming increasingly unaffordable for many buyers, the company has shifted its focus towards making Windows 11 more memory-efficient.
According to the removed webpage, which can still be accessed through the Wayback Machine, Microsoft recommended 32GB of RAM for serious users who run demanding titles or use heavy mods. However, with the current shortage, this is no longer feasible for many buyers.
In a move that may indicate future improvements to Windows 11's memory usage, Microsoft President of Windows and Devices Pavan Davuluri confirmed that the operating system will become more memory-efficient in the future.
