Microsoft Edge Spared Gatekeeper Label After EU Court Ruling

Opera has lost its EU court fight to have Microsoft Edge labelled a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The General Court in Luxembourg ruled on Wednesday that the European Commission did not err in accepting Microsoft's arguments that Edge does not constitute an important gateway between businesses and consumers.

Opera challenged a Commission decision from February 2024, which concluded that Edge met the DMA's quantitative threshold for user numbers but was not an important gateway for reaching European users.

The Norwegian browser maker argued that Edge has a durable and privileged position on Windows, making it a chokepoint regardless of how many users continue using it afterwards.
