Microsoft Engineer Brings Back Windows Phone Tiles with New App
A former Microsoft engineer is working on an app called DayFrame, which brings Windows Phone-style Live Tiles to desktop users. Jeff Fritz, who left Microsoft last month, has been showcasing the app in recent live streams.
DayFrame combines elements of Windows Phone and Outlook, offering a persistent hub with shortcuts to email, calendar, contacts, and other tools. The layout is inspired by Windows Phone and would look natural on a Lumia smartphone.
The app's interface features Live-Tile-inspired elements, icons, and text, which will be familiar to fans of retro Windows design. Although built with classic Windows UI elements in mind, DayFrame won't be exclusive to PC, it will also be available on Mac.
Fritz notes that the screenshots shown on the DayFrame website are of 'real, running code,' indicating that they're more than just design mockups. The app is designed to be expanded over time, with each module built independently and tested separately, allowing Fritz to add new modules without affecting existing ones.
