Microsoft Expands Cloud Computing Platform in Taiwan

Microsoft is expanding its cloud computing platform in Taiwan, with its Azure region already operating and serving selected customers. The company's general manager of Azure Global Infrastructure, Alistair Speirs, stated that Taiwan North, Microsoft's only Azure cloud region in Taiwan, will eventually have the same capabilities as other regions like Singapore and Japan.

Speirs emphasized that Taiwan North is still being rolled out in stages and has not yet reached general availability. He said that while it currently lacks full capabilities, it will get there over time as it grows. Microsoft established its Taiwan subsidiary in 1989 and announced plans to build a cloud datacenter region in the country in 2020.

The company's presence in Taiwan is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it enables local businesses and organizations to access Azure services, which provide computing power, data storage, artificial intelligence tools, and other services over the internet. Secondly, Taiwan plays a critical role in Microsoft's global infrastructure, with its engineers contributing to the design and optimization of systems like Maia 200, a custom AI accelerator developed by Microsoft.
