Microsoft Expands Data Centers to Meet Cloud and AI Demand
Microsoft is expanding its global data center network to meet growing demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The company plans to increase its data center capacity from about 12 gigawatts currently to over 38 gigawatts by 2032, according to Bloomberg.
This expansion comes as Microsoft faces computing shortages that have forced it to restrict some new cloud subscriptions and push certain customers towards rivals. However, a spokesperson for the company disputed the reported capacity projections, stating they were inaccurate without providing alternative figures.
Microsoft has been investing heavily in infrastructure, with its latest fiscal-year capital spending reaching $145 billion. The company currently has about 2 gigawatts of capacity focused on AI-specific chips, which could account for roughly one-third of the reported 38-gigawatt footprint by 2032.
