Microsoft Forges Default Search Engine with Bing Utility
Microsoft has released an optional utility for Windows 11 that forces users to set Bing as their default search engine in popular browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Brave.
The application, titled Microsoft Recommended Search Settings, is a standalone executable file named MicrosoftSettings.exe. Once launched, it installs the Microsoft Bing Homepage & Search extension and modifies browser settings to prioritize Bing over other search engines.
According to tests, the utility successfully changes search parameters in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Brave browsers. However, in Google Chrome, the Microsoft extension attempts to change the home page and startup page settings, prompting a warning to users about granting permission to read and change data on websites.
The decision to install this tool remains entirely with the user, as it is not a mandatory component of Windows 11. The utility was spotted by Windows tester Xeno Panther and can be downloaded as an optional download.
