Microsoft Gives Users Clear Opt-Out Option for OneDrive Sync

Microsoft has made significant changes to its OneDrive integration on Windows 11. Users are now being presented with an explicit 'Opt out of backup' option, allowing them to fully opt-out of syncing files to OneDrive.

This change comes after years of complaints from users who felt pushed into syncing their files to OneDrive without clear options to opt-out. The new full-screen pop-up alert allows users to explicitly choose whether they want to back up their PC with OneDrive's cloud storage or not.

Previously, when the same full-screen experience popped up, users were typically asked to either Continue, which enabled OneDrive and started syncing everything before they could figure out how to disable it, or select 'Remind me in 3 days'. There was no obvious 'No, I don't want this' option.

Microsoft still recommends OneDrive to protect files and memories by backing up PCs, but the new opt-out option is a significant change for users who prefer not to use cloud storage. The company has also dropped its worst dark pattern, where users could never permanently dismiss OneDrive backup alerts.
