Microsoft Hikes Xbox Prices up to 43% in Europe Amid AI-Driven Component Shortage

Microsoft has increased the prices of Xbox consoles in Europe by as much as 43%, citing soaring RAM and storage costs due to the AI industry's demand for semiconductor supply. The price hikes affect both the Xbox Series S and Series X, with the former increasing from £299.99/€349.99 to £429.99/€499.99, and the latter jumping from £499.99/€599.99 to £669.99/€799.99. This move comes after Microsoft initially announced US price increases in June.

The AI industry's insatiable appetite for computing components is driving up costs, with companies like Nvidia, OpenAI, and hyperscalers competing for memory supply. As a result, consumer products are becoming collateral damage, with the semiconductor industry struggling to add capacity quickly enough. New fabs take years to come online, meaning these supply constraints could persist well into 2027.

Microsoft's decision to pass on the increased costs to consumers rather than absorbing them themselves may set a precedent for the gaming industry. If Sony follows suit and raises PlayStation 5 prices, it would signal a new normal for console economics. However, if Sony absorbs the costs instead, Microsoft could find itself at a disadvantage.
