Microsoft Invests Big in AI Infrastructure Amid Surging Demand
Microsoft's Azure cloud services revenue grew 43% year on year in Q4 FY26, reaching USD 59.3 billion in Microsoft Cloud revenue and crossing USD 100 billion in annual Azure revenue for the first time.
The company added nearly USD 450 billion in market value just a day after reporting these results, setting a record for the largest one-day increase by a company.
Despite this growth, Microsoft is not slowing down its spending. Instead, it's preparing to invest billions more in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
CFO Amy Hood described the current situation as 'a sort of relatively extreme moment' where demand exceeds supply. The company reported capital expenditure of USD 41 billion during Q2 FY26, a 70% increase year on year, and expects USD 50 billion in the first quarter of FY27 and USD 175 billion for calendar 2026.
Microsoft's AI infrastructure is capacity-constrained, meaning it cannot fully convert enterprise demand into Azure and Copilot consumption without sufficient servers, AI accelerators, power, cooling, and network capacity.
