Microsoft Issues Emergency Windows 11 Patch Amid Widespread Regressions
Microsoft released an emergency patch for Windows 11 to fix several critical issues caused by its September Patch Tuesday update. The update, KB5129195, addresses three regressions that affected Remote Desktop Services, Linux virtual machines, and USB audio devices.
The September update had a record number of fixes, addressing between 964 and 974 CVEs, with 723 in Windows alone. This surge in patches may have contributed to the problems experienced by some users, including AMD Radeon crashes and Explorer.exe failing to start or crashing.
The emergency patch is a mandatory cumulative update that installs automatically for eligible machines running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. It also closes a privilege escalation flaw that September's patch hadn't fully fixed. Microsoft still lists a known issue with audio devices failing to produce sound or show volume controls stuck at zero.
