Microsoft Joins Industry Efforts for Decentralized AI Governance
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that his company will release its first draft of behavioral guidelines for the MAI model for public consultation tomorrow. The move comes as the AI industry grapples with issues of governance and safety, following a recent call by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to slow down AI development.
Nadella stated that AI governance cannot be controlled by a few entities but must have broad representation across ecosystems, countries, and academia. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the benefits of AI are widely distributed, rather than being concentrated among a few players.
Microsoft's three-tier approach to AI governance includes providing broad access and choice at every layer of the AI technology stack, ensuring enterprise control over learning cycles and models, and releasing transparent guidelines for public consultation. Nadella also highlighted the need for decentralized governance in the AI industry, stating that it cannot be controlled by a small number of entities.
Meanwhile, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have been privately discussing the establishment of an industry standards body for AI, with working group meetings continuing as recently as last week. The White House executive order to establish an AI self-regulatory body similar to FINRA has stalled due to insufficient support within the Trump administration.
