Microsoft Locks into Long-Term Renewable Energy Deal with Cypress Creek Energy
Cypress Creek Energy has announced that its Ostrea Solar project in Washington state is now operational and supplying electricity to Microsoft, which signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the company. The PPA covers energy and environmental products generated by the solar project, but the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The Ostrea project adds 104 megawatts direct current/80 MW alternating current of new electricity generation to the region's power system and will be owned and operated by Cypress Creek for up to 40 years. The company claims that the project expands the clean energy infrastructure needed to meet rising energy demand in Washington, which saw its gross domestic product expand at an annualized rate of 4.5% in Q1 this year.
Microsoft's use of renewable energy has increased due to the expansion of its data center infrastructure and a policy change on unbundled renewable energy certificates, leading to a 25% increase in scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity in FY2025.
