Microsoft Merges Consumer and Enterprise Copilot Apps in Pursuit of Super App

Microsoft has started integrating its consumer and enterprise Copilot apps in an effort to create a unified super app, which will combine chat, coding, and autonomous functions. The company announced that it is rolling out changes across both platforms, starting with a small subset of users this week.

The initial changes will primarily affect the consumer Copilot app, with some features set to be removed on August 18, including Copilot Podcasts, Group Chat, and Deep Research. The Microsoft 365 app will be renamed as the 'Microsoft Copilot' app.

This is part of a larger project aimed at creating a super app that will feature a chat function, GitHub Copilot coding assistant, the Copilot Cowork tool, and Autopilot agentic workflow capability. Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, has stated that the company's goal is to better compete with market leaders like Anthropic and OpenAI while growing its enterprise Copilot business.

The super app project is being led by Jacob Andreou, a 33-year-old executive at Microsoft who has been tasked with saving the company's AI strategy. Nadella recently expressed concerns about relying on single AI models, stating that 'you can't depend on any one model' and that multiple models may be needed to address potential challenges.
