Motion papers from the news organizations, including The New York Times and the Orange County Register, claim that OpenAI's chatbots often churn out distorted facts in content that resembles news but contains inaccurate information about current events.

According to a July motion filed by the news organizations, OpenAI destroyed evidence and concealed its ability to locate stolen news stories in training data and in responses to ChatGPT users.
