Microsoft Outlook Email Service Disrupted Globally Due to Maintenance-Related Activity
Microsoft's Outlook email service experienced widespread disruptions on August 31, 2026, affecting users worldwide. According to Downdetector, a website that aggregates user problem reports and social media metrics, reports of Outlook problems spiked sharply at 8:16 a.m. PDT, jumping from around 37 reports to over 6,000 in a few minutes.
Microsoft's 365 status team initially informed users that they were investigating reports of Exchange Online issues but later attributed the outage to 'maintenance-related activity' having an 'unintended impact.' This means that the service interruption was not due to a hacking incident. The maintenance activity had been halted, and the service had returned to standard availability levels by August 26, 2026.
Users experienced major delays or complete failures in sending and receiving emails, issues searching mailbox content, and authentication login errors. Other affected services included OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Defender XDR.
