Microsoft Patents Adaptive Biometric Authentication System
A new Microsoft patent application proposes adapting biometric authentication to on-screen risk. The system considers three factors: sensitivity of the displayed content, location of the device, and viewing permissions of people nearby.
The proposed biometric authentication system would analyze metadata identifying a document's sensitivity and protected information sections. For instance, documents containing financial records or national security material could receive stronger protection than public-access content.
A high-risk situation could trigger a check every 30 seconds or few minutes, while a low-risk setting might be checked hourly. The system would use cameras to capture people in front of the display and analyze voice or other audio data to identify those present or determine if they are close enough to view the screen.
Microsoft already uses sensitivity labels in Purview to classify files and emails, which remain in a file's metadata and support policies like encryption and access restrictions. The proposed system adds an extra layer to this process by attempting to biometrically identify observers and compare their access rights with the permissions governing specific information on screen.
